The defending champions Australia will play Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 on October 5, while India, the recent winners of the Asia Cup, will play New Zealand in Dubai one day earlier.
On October 6, Dubai will host the highly anticipated match between India and Pakistan. On October 3 in Sharjah, Bangladesh, the hosts, will meet Scotland in the exhibition match.
Sheikh Hasina’s government was overthrown earlier this month in Bangladesh as a result of widespread protests. After considerable deliberation, the ICC decided to hold this major tournament in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) despite the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials’ best efforts to persuade the highest authority to retain it in the nation.
On Monday, August 26, the ICC released the updated schedule, which now has an equal amount of group matches between Dubai and Sharjah. India, the overwhelming favourites of the event, will play three games in Dubai and the elite Australian team, three of their four group matches, in Sharjah.
England and South Africa will compete in another heavyweight match in Sharjah the following day, while India and Pakistan will play in an afternoon match on October 6.
The October 13 match between Australia and India will take place in Sharjah.
In addition, one semi-final will be held in Dubai on October 17, and if India advances, that match will take place there. The second semi-final will be held in Sharjah on October 18 the next day. The final will take place in Dubai on October 20. However, this time around, both semifinals will have a reserve day, in contrast to the men’s T20 World Cup, when only India’s semifinal match included one.
Dubai comes first.
Curiously, no women’s T20I has ever been held in Dubai. From September 28 to October 3, all teams will play practice matches to get a feel for the conditions.
The top two teams from each group advance to the semifinals, with the remaining ten teams split equally into two groups.
Group A consists of South Africa, England, the West Indies, Bangladesh, and Scotland; Group B includes India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka.
