On Thursday, Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper for Real Madrid, declared that he would be leaving the Belgium national team, which is now coached by Domenico Tedesco.
Known as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the world, Courtois was excluded from the Belgium team for the European Championship after an argument with Tedesco the previous season. For the Euros, Koen Casteels took his spot.
“I consider myself fortunate to have had the honor of donning the national shirt. “I could never have imagined being able to accomplish this more than 100 times,” Courtois wrote on social media. “Unfortunately, after giving it some thought and in light of what transpired with the coach, I have chosen not to rejoin the Belgian national team under his direction.
“I acknowledge my part of the responsibility in this affair. Looking ahead, though, my lack of faith in him would not help to preserve the essential friendly environment.”
The 32-year-old goalkeeper stated that the Belgian FA has recognized his perspective and the factors that went into the decision. The goalie sustained an injury but recovered in time to assist Real Madrid win the Champions League in June.
“Although I may have disappointed some supporters, I firmly believe that this is the right move for Belgium since it puts an end to a controversy and frees the squad to concentrate on reaching its objectives. Courtois stated, “I am so grateful for your unwavering love, support, and understanding.”
After France eliminated Belgium in the round of 16 of the European Championship, Tedesco’s strategies made many wonder if he was the appropriate man for the position.
Before the Euros started, the German manager, who was born in Italy, agreed a contract extension. He started working there in February 2023.
But under Tedesco, the group that finished first in the world rankings for almost three years and advanced to the 2018 World Cup semifinals has had just passable performances.
